What is an RPL file?

An RPL file is a match replay recorded by Toribash, a multiplatform fighting game developed by Nabi Studios. It contains a (plain text) record of everything that occurred during a match, including the fighters' movements and the final score. Players can create RPL files at the end of a match by pressing F on their keyboard.

More Information

In Toribash, players control the joints of stick-figure-like characters to create custom fighting moves. Players can play against the game's AI or other players. They can also practice their moves in free play modes.

If a player wants to save a replay of their match or free play session, they can do so by pressing F at the end of the session. Toribash then saves a record of the session as an RPL file.

Each RPL file contains plain text data that Toribash uses to replay the match or free play session it describes. Players can share RPL files with each other so they can watch and edit each others' replays. (To edit a replay, press E while the replay is playing.)

Where does Toribash save RPL files?

Toribash typically saves RPL files in its ~/Toribash/replay directory. For example, the Windows Steam version of Toribash saves RPL files to the following directory:

C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Toribash/replay

How to open an RPL file

You can open an RPL file in Toribash (multiplatform). To do so, place the file in your ~/Toribash/replay directory. Then, open Toribash and select Setup → Replays. You should be able to select and play the replay your RPL file contains.

You can also open an RPL file in any text editor, to view the plain text data it contains.

BeamNG.Drive Replay

An RPL file may also be a game replay created by BeamNG.Drive, a driving simulation game. It contains information that BeamNG.Drive uses to reconstruct and replay a player's gameplay. RPL files can be played only in BeamNG.Drive.

More Information

BeamNG.Drive allows players to drive many types of cars, trucks, and other vehicles in races, special scenarios, and free play mode. While playing, players can press Alt + R to record their gameplay. When the player stops playing, BeamNG.Drive saves a record of the user's gameplay as an RPL file.

RPL files do not contain video data. Instead, they contain a record of where objects resided at the start of a recording and how they moved during the recording. For this reason, RPL files cannot be opened and played in video players. BeamNG.Drive players can open RPL files and play the replays they describe using the game's Replays feature.

NOTE: If you want to "convert" an RPL file into a video file, play the RPL file in BeamNG.Drive and use a screen recorder to record your screen.

How to open an RPL file

You can open an RPL file with BeamNG.Drive (Windows). To do so, place the file in the following directory:

~/Documents/BeamNG.Drive/replays

Then, use BeamNG.Drive's Replay feature (found on the game's main menu) to play the replay your RPL file contains.

Escape Video File

An RPL file contains video data encoded with the ESCAPE codec and uncompressed or compressed audio data stored in the ARMovie multimedia container format. It is used in various computer games including Big Red Racing and the Tomb Raider series. RPL files are primarily used for saving replays of gameplay.

More Information

All of the games that utilize RPL files are discontinued, with most of them being released in the 1990s. Since the files are no longer used to save replays you will most likely only encounter them if you have installed one of these older Eidos-developed PC games.

The RPL files all utilize the same multimedia container but may store video encoded in different variations of the ESCAPE codec. The variations include ESCAPE 122, 124, and 130.

NOTE: Eidos Interactive was acquired by Square Enix in 2009.

How to open an RPL file

There are few programs that support RPL files since they are rarely used. However, you can open and convert RPL files to more common video formats with FFmpeg, then open the converted file with a media player, such as Microsoft Windows Media Player or VLC media player.

Dolby Cinema Print Master File

An RPL file may also be a cinema print master file created using Dolby Atmos Monitor and a Dolby Rendering and Mastering Unit, a professional sound rendering system that is made available to only select, cinema-grade filmmakers. It contains audio that is designed to be included in a film that will be played in a Dolby Atmos theater. RPL files can also be played back in the commercially-available Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite and Dolby Atmos Production Suite, using Dolby Atmos Renderer.

More Information

Dolby provides certain filmmakers and studios with a specially-licensed computer that is designed specifically to let sound engineers and designers create cinema-grade Dolby Atmos audio tracks. These computers, called Dolby Rendering and Mastering Units, are controlled from a secondary PC using Avid Pro Tools, a separately-licensed digital audio workstation, and the Dolby Atmos Monitor. The Monitor is used to condense all the audio files and other information included within a movie's Pro Tools project into one master audio track, which is saved with the .rpl extension. This RPL file is then included within a movie before that movie is shipped to and played at Dolby Atmos theaters.

While non-cinema-level filmmakers cannot create RPL files, they can play them. Dolby's commercially-available Atmos Mastering Suite and Atmos Production Suite can both play RPL files, using the Dolby Atmos Renderer included within those suites.

How to open an RPL file

You can open and play an RPL file with Dolby Atmos Renderer, the audio rendering application included within the Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite and Dolby Atmos Production Suite. To do so, open the Renderer and select File → Open Master File.

You can also convert an RPL file to a more usable format, such as WAV, with the Dolby Atmos Conversion Tool included within Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite.
